We’ll start by explaining what the wind ‘window’ is relating to kiting. Basically the window is the area that the kite can be in relation to the rider when looking downwind. The distance is the line length from the kite to the rider and the range the kite can take from being straight overhead ....to in the water. Imagine a 1/4 piece of pie.
When starting, stopping, or taking a break in the water- the kite is generally placed in the ‘neutral’ position which is at the top of the window but not directly overhead. This is a safe position because the weight of the rider keeps the kite down and the least amount of directional pull on the rider.
Pull pressure on the right side of the bar turns the kite clockwise, and pulling on the left side of the bar turns the kite counter-clock wise. Generally the most power you will receive from your kite is when it is in the center of the flying window. Not too high, not too low.
Steering your kite should be fairly effortless because there is a balance of body weight and lean, to the pull of the kite. Too much pressure or tweaking of the body may be a result of improper equipment setup.
